Amazon Web Services Inc., an Amazon.com subsidiary has announced AWS Wavelength, a tool which aids developers to develop applications that serve end users with minimal single-digit millisecond latencies, when operated over 5G networks.
Wavelength runs by embedding AWS compute and storage services at the edge of the telecommunication provider’s 5G networks, thereby allowing developers to make use of use-cases, which need ultra-low latencies. These can include machine learning interference, virtual reality, autonomous industrial equipment, augmented reality, smart cars, internet of things and smart city plans.
AWS Wavelength allows developers to deploy parts of applications with low latencies, while seamlessly connecting back to the remainder of the applications for a full range of cloud services by the company. AWS has revealed plans to collaborate with Verizon to make the Wavelength service available in the United States.
At present, the pilot initiative for the service has been released only to select Verizon 5G Edge customers. AWS is also collaborating with other major telecommunications enterprises such as KDDI, Vodafone, and SK Telecom for the launch of Wavelength to countries such as Japan, Korea, and Europe.

Matt Garman, the Vice President for Compute Services AWS spoke about the developments: “With Wavelength, we bring 5G and cloud together to give our customers the powerful new capability to run cloud services consistently within a few milliseconds of mobile end-users. This is a game changer for developers that is going to unlock a whole new generation of applications and services. We are really excited to see our customers innovate with these unique new capabilities that they did not have access to before.”
Verizon has been pushing to build a powerful 5G network in the United States, with its Ultra Wideband network, which has currently been made live in 18 U.S. cities, with plans for an additional 30 cities by the end of 2019.
